Frequently Asked Questions
Is this something new? I’ve never heard of a doula.
Doulas continue the ancient, time-honored tradition of women helping each other through pregnancy and childbirth. In the past your mother, sister or a knowledgeable neighbor would have served as your doula. Nowadays, with friends and family often spread across several time zones, professional doulas are filling the need. A doula is someone there to serve you and meet you where you are. I am trained and certified to do just that.
What are the benefits of working with a doula?
Doula support is an evidence based way to enhance your birthing experience. Having doula support increases patient satisfaction. Doulas help reduce the mother’s anxiety and fear around the birth experience. This can lead to shorter and more comfortable labors. Studies show that working with a doula improves birth outcomes! Doula support reduces the rate of medical interventions, including C-sections, improves mother-baby bonding and allows you enjoy birthing your baby.
What is the difference between a doula and a midwife?
Midwives have medical training and can offer additional services such as IV, prescribe medication, administer medical exams. A Doula’s focus is on supporting the mother throughout the birthing process in the more hand on ways, such as rubbing your back, changing your linen during a home-birth, preparing a warm bath, offering water and snacks when you need it most, holding your hand, hearing how you are feeling, providing resources and lots of knowledge. Doulas are not medical providers. Doulas and midwives often work together as a team.
